There are two emulators, Hioyo for original Game Boy games and Sloop for Game Boy Advance titles. The emulator seems to have been developed by Nintendo Europe Research and Development. Some have already verified that the emulator works on a Nintendo Switch and as many as 40 games have been tested and verified to be working. Recently, Nintendo expanded its Switch Online roster with new sets of classic games and a recent leak suggests another major expansion could be on the way, introducing Game Boy Advance titles for the first time.Īs spotted by a fan on Twitter, Nintendo's official Game Boy Advance emulator for the Nintendo Switch recently leaked online and was swiftly shared across boards like 4Chan, and eventually Reddit, Twitter and various Discord servers. That may all change someday, but for now Pokemon fans will just have to find other means to play these iconic games.Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulation is something that Nintendo Switch owners have been clamouring for since launch. However, it seems like the studios have chosen not to do either. The addition of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance Pokemon games to the Nintendo Switch is the perfect way to preserve history, and the Pokemon Presents livestream would have been the perfect place to announce something like that. Abandoning these games on older consoles does a disservice to what came before, and may also hurt video game preservation in the long run.
There is nothing wrong with creating new adventures for fans to enjoy, but these developers should also honor their past. Nintendo and The Pokemon Company seem to have little interest in revisiting these titles, and instead they want to forge ahead with brand-new Pokemon experiences. There are so many classic Pokemon games that are unplayable today unless players have the old hardware or use emulators.
However, that too has been left behind in favor of the Nintendo Switch. This has left these classic titles gathering dust on their respective consoles, and only Ruby and Sapphire received a full-on remake for the 3DS. While some of these games also got released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, that service has been discontinued. Players are not able to revisit Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, or Emerald on the Nintendo Switch. Unless players own these consoles, there is no way that they can really play these classic games without an emulator.Īlong with the Game Boy, Nintendo has also left out all the Game Boy Advance Pokemon games. Gold and Silver would at least get a remake for the Nintendo DS under the names HeartGold and SoulSilver, and Crystal would get released on the now defunct Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, but the titles have since been left behind. Pokemon Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal have also been left mostly untouched since their debut. Pokemon Red and Blue are not the only Pokemon games that have been left behind on Nintendo's classic handhelds.
